Bill knows Labor are toast.
He knew that it made no difference - Gillard or Rudd are both goners, regardless of who is the leader.
So he would be crazy not to put his vote with the most popular of a bad bunch.
He's setting himself up for the next election campaign - he will take the Labor leadership at some point after they lose to Abbott and try to carry them to victory at the following election.
