Taskforce tailings
Friday, 28 June 2013
THE government review over its mine tailings legislation is getting into gear with visits reportedly planned to the Porgera, Ok Tedi, Lihir and Hidden Valley mines in Papua New Guinea.
Driving a truck at the Ok Tedi mine is challenging work.
According to Radio New Zealand, the Constitutional Law Reform Commission’s working committee will visit the mines next month.
CLRC secretary Dr Eric Kwa reportedly said environmental and health impacts in the tailings disposal areas would be researched.
It released a 97-page issues paper over mine tailings legal reforms in February, which mentions the riverine tailings disposal policy failures at the Panguna and Ok Tedi mines.
The document was first completed in July 2007, meaning it was effectively shelved quite some time before the Ramu nickel cobalt mine developers won a lengthy court battle over their deepsea tailings placement plans.
Most advanced mining projects in PNG are considering tailings dam methods despite the challenges from high rainfall and seismic activity in PNG.
Industry and other submissions to the issues paper are due before September 30
