Cletus, I do agree with the first test. I only really watched because of folau, but i did think it was a little more entertaining than usual.
And in regard to the scrum, rugby purists believe it is what sets itself apart from league. But as you alluded to, league did away with scrums because it just became too technical and too much unneeded pressure on referees with an every growing media presence. League brought in the differential penalty to combat kicks for goal, but then found the scrum too controversial.
With the line out, the scrum and a vast number of penalties in the rucks/mauls, there's just too much influence from referees and not enough influence on attack.
Anyway, as i said, i am happy for rugby to keep their rules as is. At least league administrators are continually willing to make rule changes for the sake of the game and it just keeps evolving.
I don't want to make out to be overly critical of rugby because I respect each sport for its skill and passionate supporter base. It's just that it could be such a better game to watch on a more consistent basis.
