There is a belief that the public in a democracy are untrustworthy and must be manipulated. Nationalistic and patriotic brainwashing from birth is merely a tool that lessens questioning of one's countries motives. Media perform as information assimilators and spindoctors - politicians employ journalists as spindoctors. It's a very sick, very distorted world we live in - thankfully we have not sunk so low as the US.
