There is one more potential reason to keep the share price down. Lets take for example you have a very strong company that provides a service/product. The compnay currently operates in a major market and it has plans to expand globally, but is doing so in phases i.e one region at a time.

Now..someone has picked up on the potential of this service/product and starts to offer the same thing in a region that is yet to be serviced by the major company. The company relizes that this other company could be a major threat to their planned future entry, being publicly listed and very low in value it is very easy to try to prevent competitor or potential competitor growth or even kill it off.
