There's no upside to Abbott debating Rudd. It makes Rudd look like he's calling the shots and has legitimacy.
And if Rudd wins does it mean he's a good PM? Debates only tell you so much. Obama was a good debater, except his first one against Romney, but he's a dud President. Same with Whitlam, g8 debater worst PM until Gillard.
