Typically occurs when a broker has a buyer and a seller of the same stock and can automatically trade them through the broker's Internal Crossing System at or within the confines of the NBBO price.
Because this is slightly faster than through the normal Public Trading System, it often results in the clients of the broker getting a slightly better deal on the price.
