Back when slavery was legal, a slave ship was in a terrible
storm and in great danger of sinking. In desperation
Captain John Newton said a prayer. The storm eased.

Back on dry land in England, John Newton gave up
his wicked past and become a Church of England
pastor that William Wilberforce (a member of the
House of Lords) chose as his spiritual mentor.
Together they championed the abolition of
slavey. John Newton wrote this hymn.
