While our politicians (of both sides) are gathering the courage to withdraw from the UN refugee convention and stop rewarding boatpeople an urgent patchover is needed.
As a temporary measure we should hire three Indonesian ships, with Indonesian crews to answer emergency calls from boats and rescue people. Take them back to Indonesia.
This would be much cheaper than using our navy to rescue Indonesian boats.
