Telstra outlines plans to expand 4G network

Telstra is set to further expand the footprint of its 4G network, setting itself a goal to service 85 per cent of the Australian population with 4G coverage by Christmas this year.
As part of a focus on what could be considered to be Telstra’s key strength, regional coverage, the telco will aim to service an extra 200 regional town in time for holiday goers to enjoy its 4G network.
The news comes as Telstra reaffirmed today that it met the last 4G network target to service 66 per cent of the Australian population with its 4G network by June. That goal saw the telco upgrade or install 2000 4G base-stations across Australia in 10 months.
In contrast, its latest endeavour will see it install or upgrade 1500 base stations in less than six months.
Telstra’s chief operations officer Brendon Riley said that this new target notes a shift in its regional coverage strategy. While its 3G coverage would be maintained, the telco would roll out its 4G service rather than enhance its existing 3G service to expand capacity capabilities out in regional Australia.
The company’s mobiles executive director Warwick Bray also said that Telstra would expand its pre-paid 4G-enabled phone offering leading up to the Christmas shopping season.
