It's nothing to go down to the cop shop and have charges laid on someone and I imagine it's nothing to launch a civil suit too if you have the lawyers & money.
Whether they will be successful in court is another matter altogether.
In my uneducated opinion, I highly doubt the defamation case will be successful.
