Don't quite agree with you re the tax provision. Under the self assessment system, the taxpayer determines their own tax liability.
In this case, ANZ would have determined their tax liability and provided for it in their accounts. If, following investigation, the ATO decide to issue amended assessments, then these amounts are over and above the tax liability determined by ANZ and would not form part of the tax provision.
Don't know enough facts in this case to comment on the validity of any amended assessments - only to say that it is one thing for the ATO to issue them, but it is quite another for the assessment to stand. No doubt ANZ would fight tooth and nail to defeat them
