The public is very naive when it comes to taxes. They get all revved up about this but are unaware of other stealth taxes that never receive publicity.
Eg. the GST on air tickets is added on AFTER all other taxes are applied. Those taxes can be almost half the fare, so the net effect is that the GST rate on air tickets is always at least 12% and can be as high as 18%.
Next time you are in the airport zoo, just think about how much extra money that higher GST rate brings in.
If you ask a member of the General Public what the GST rate is they will say 10%, and no politician will admit to raising it. But very quietly millions of people are already paying a lot more.
