    Chuck,

The essence of Howard's "metaphor" is that children and women's lives were being put at risk. Whether any were thrown overboard is irrelevant when one considers that these innocents were forced onto overcrowded unseaworthy boats that put every passenger at enormous risk. The sinking of the Siev X in which 146 children,142 women and 65 men perished, when this equally overloaded ,unseaworthy boat sank, is a vindication of Howard's implied claim that they cared little for the safety of their children and women. crikey.com is just peddling the sort of hair-splitting that anti- Howardites embrace.
