For the record, during WW2 approximately 61 million individuals (military and civilian) lost their lives. Russia had nearly 25 million deaths, followed by China with 11 million and Germany with 7 million.

The U.S. lost 295,000 soldiers in death, and had a total of 405,399 American casualties (including wounded). In comparison, during the Civil War fought in the United States from 1861-1865, 624,511 individuals lost their lives.



In 1939 Roosevelt appeals for peace in Europe . Hitler invaded 6 months later.

2 months later the US passes the Neutrality Act, and Roosevelt tells Congress: "The executive branch of the Government did its utmost, within our traditional policy of noninvolvement, to aid in averting the present appalling war. Having thus striven and failed, this Government must lose no time or effort to keep the Nation from being drawn into the war."

In 1940 whilst Hitler was wiping out europe the US transfers fifty "over-age" destroyers to Great Britain in exchange for ninety-nine year leases on eight naval and air bases.

In 1941 whilst Germant was bombing Coventry Roosevelt delivers his annual message to Congress, calling for a world founded on freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear ("Four Freedoms Speech").

Later that year they pass the Lend-lease Act exchanging armaments for rights and deferred payments.

Later in 1941 Japan bombs Pearl Harbour and the US declares war on Japan and 2 days later Germany and Italy declare war on the US and the US responds in same.

The Lend lease program just about broke the UK however it enabled the Allies to win.
