If penalty rates are preventing employers from operating a business and employing young people then obviously they are not fulfilling their function.

Go to Asia and demand penalty rates. Good luck.

Its a nasty but necessary truth for our young people to face that the age of Australia being an island is over. Protectionism has failed and now its a world of global manufacturing and the relentless drive to efficiency.

Employers have to be motivated to actually help young people, not driven away to outsourcing.

The whole tax system needs to be rebuilt from ground up. Thats going to be a very uncomfortable discussion for Australia but its high time it occurs.

I have always wondered why someone doesnt table the idea of stopping negative gearing but making mortgage interest tax deductible on primary residences (up to $500k). Sure the baby boomers would squeal and I am sure some mucking about would happen but as an idea to help young people get on the ladder I cant find the holes.
