Baby Bonus was only about $5000 paid over 6 months and was just enough to cover the ongoing costs of providing for a new born baby. By the time you buy a pram and a cot and all those other essential baby items plus clothes, nappies and baby formula etc there wasn't much money left over. It was a fairly balanced payment and means tested by Labor.
