I saw this, written by an RL on another forum and thought that rather sums up the position nicely

Voters become scared that the next government will stop the freebies and social security handouts and that they may actually have to go out and work, so they keep voting their benefactors in.
If the labour/socialist party has a big union base, then they team up against private enterprise to screw them over well and truly,
forgetting where the royalties, tax, job creation comes from that keeps feeding the freebies and grants.
