In the generation before mine, there was one undisputed head of the household, who nobody questioned. My father once absolutely decked me just for saying "Eh?". When I became a father, I intentionally softened a bit compared to him, and let my wife "dare" to question me,etc, lol.

In hindsight? I should have had them all out doing forced marches (including wife) every morning before breakfast....

But nothing seems to matter theses days, the family unit is virtually stuffed anyway, most eat in front of the telly.
No "Please may I leave the table" from the kids.....everyone just does as they like....
Society is stuffed...
Forgive him and support him, mate, he probably did his best.
There is no real manual for training wives and raising kids...one just does what he thinks he has to. And sometimes we get it wrong.
