struggler - "Turnbull helpfully pointed out in response to the petition that our incoming prime minister is not for turning"

That facetious comment simply means that, unlike the previous government, this one will honour its promises to 54% of the electorate

    -------------------------------

glug - "frasier, yet more cash than the total cost of the NBN is going into things like PPL."

I agree that's a waste of money too. Taxpayers ought not be investing risk capital, nor subsidising lifestyle choices of couples to have children.

    ------------------------------

glug - "frasier, does that view extend to roads?"

That comment is just plain silly! Roads, rail, defence, water and other essential infrastructure are vastly different from what private equity can, and should, deliver according to market forces. That includes banks, airlines and telecom services.

    -------------------------------

Again, it seems the loudest critics of Turnbull's eminently sensible decision are geeks who are concerned about downloading movies. The vast majority of consumers do not need ultra fast broadband nor extreme bandwidth - they should not be forced to subsidise others who do.

Someone mentioned here that Telstra installed fibre at South Brisbane and the cost is higher than other services. Exactly my point! If you want a Rolls Royce service then you should pay for it, not me and not any other taxpayers.

I see that glug and other supporters here don't mention a cost benefit analysis by the Productivity Commission - for the same reason Conroy and his pirate band hid the NBN from scrutiny. It makes no economic sense.

I am confident Abbott and Turnbull will keep faith with the people on their pledge to shut down this atrociously expensive white elephant and implement a far more sensible alternative.
