I don't know if he was a hero or villain Hanrahan.
What I did see on Corregidor was a deep reverence for the US/Philippine military alliance in WW2.
The Japanese invasion of the Philippines happened on December the 8th, hours after the attack on Pearl Harbour:

I heard stories of Japanese atrocities in the Philippines, such as tossing a baby into the air, and seeing who could catch it on their bayonet, etc.
And the Bataan Death March....

Our tour guide on Corregidor said that some of the Japanese tour guides tell Japanese tourists that Pearl Harbour didn't happen, and that Japan 'liberated' the Philippines from Western Imperialism!
Instead, life deteriorated under the Japanese occupation, in a big way!
Like I said H, worth a visit if you are interested.
By the way, MacArthur also saw service in Korea.
Check out the bit about Nukes....

Interesting stuff IMO.
