I doubt if the average bod in the street will be buying a kilo bar of gold - ditto, the average bod doesn't buy five figure jewellery.

If they do and they don't get a valuation - independent - then they may as well have diamonds in their head.

You are correct in that there are synthetics - but eg. synthetic rubies have done no less than drive the price of good real rubies through the roof.

Try and buy a good large size one and see how easy it is.
