"National broadcasters are important, the BBC are regarded as conservative and attacked accordingly."
Rubbish on both counts!
To take the second point, the BBC makes our ABC look almost reasonable in its ideological outlook. Conservative? Hardly! It is even more left wing in its outlook, more pro arab and anti-Israeli in its middle east outlook - much like the rest of the public service in fact. Those of us with access to BBC World can see it starkly demonstrated in its political reporting.
National broadcasters are important? For what? We used to think state owned banks, airlines and telecoms were too. But they aren't at all. Same goes for media outlets. Privately owned TV, radio, internet opinion outlets ought not have to compete with taxpayer funded bodies that compete and steal their markets unfairly.
Privatise the ABC! If there is a market for what it sells - and there may be - then it will flourish. If not, then ... well! Either way, the markets will be right as they usually are.
It is only those of the left who want the ABC to remain on the public teat, so that the 67% of us who don't share its philosophies are compelled to pay for it. If they are so confident of its manifest benefits, then surely they can't object to paying for it - for goodness sake, this is an investor forum - you can stake your claim and buy shares in it! Wonder how many of the few capitalist lefties who inhabit HC [an oxymoron I know] would stump up equity in ABC Pty Ltd. I have a fair idea........
