jambo12, there was nothing stopping negotiation and the repeating of the same deal for another 800. So yes the deal was repeatable.

sypaladin, Abbott will have similar issues with the Senate when he tries to remove the Carbon Tax, without support from outside his party he won't get the required legislation through.

The same issue faced Labor with the legislation that would have allowed the Malaysian deal.

Abbott made it abundantly clear he would not support the legislation that would allow the government of the day to implement initiatives like the Malaysian deal.

It appears that no one is prepared to acknowledge that if Abbott hadn't of opposed the Malaysian deal, some of those 700 lives may not have been lost.

Lets ask another question that should be a little easier to answer.

What key event happened in the later half of 2011 that caused the Asylum Seeker numbers to increase to over 33,000 in the last 2 years of the Labor government?

Keep in mind Labor's 4 years prior only had about a third of that amount for double the period.

Also note that the 33,000 in 2 years was more that the total in the previous 36 years.

What policy changes or events occurred in the later half of 2011 that caused this massive spike?
