CDU started with a box cut to get test ore for the crusher, this ore starts from 15-18m below surface. The main pit can't be dug safely with steep walls like a box cut (think landslide). To safely dig a deep pit, large amounts of waste must be removed initially, look at the waste zones in the pit design cross section images from any recent drill report to get an idea of the waste:ore ratio close to the surface.
As the pit gets deeper, the waste:ore ratio should improve exponentially.
The report only details activities up to the end of June. I'd expect that a lot more digging has occurred in the last three months, especially with all the dry weather.
