When those stations were built, cars did not even have seat belts, they had drum brakes, metal dashboards, airbags were science fiction. They also got 100hp from 2 litre engines.
I suspect that nuclear technology has advanced at at least as fast as the modern car, now with seat belts, brake assist technology, collision avoidance, stability controls, umpteen airbags, and now getting 360 hp from 2 litre engines. (the newest MB).
Comparing 1970 with 2013 does not do it I'm afraid.
