As for Sophie Mirabella - she won the Primary vote very easily. Got outed on preferences. Hers a hge electorate to get around. Perhaps she took things too much for granted. But I don't presume to KNOW - not as confident and all-seeing as you.
It could be alleged that Mirabella fell victim to a campaign run with the support of hundreds of young determined young volunteers. I have always wondered WHY their huge passion - to see Mirabella go down - and, I allege, as Get Up" a young Leftist's structure - if that entity didn't have something to do with the Independent beating Mirabella - via sheer force of numbers in the campaign.
I smelt - allege - surmise, maybe quite wrongly - the big help of "Get Up" here, getting this Independent over the line. Said there were 600 volunteers helping this winning candidate's cause - WHY? I would ask,. And where from? But then what would I know?
Mirabella deserved a Front Bench possie. McFarlane, though, and perhaps, will turn out a better Industry Minister.
