My sister-in-law has stem sell treatment for the nasty disease multiple myeloma. First she had chemotherapy, and then further, stronger chemotherapy that somehow increased the amount of stem cells produced in her bone marrow.
They harvested the cells from her bone marrow to use in the treatment - assume they infused them into her bloodstream.
Obviously she was very crook for months during the treatment, but now is in remission, though still weak and in pain, and with no over-optimistic prognosis.
No foetal cells needed, and no anti-rejection drugs.
