Guys, shorting is not the issue here.
If I am correct in my thinking in that I believe SM to be buying this downtrend then shorting does not come into play.
If the recent push lower is what I think it is then its something more like this...

Major holder (Mr X) has say 40mil shares in his pocket.
Mr X can see stop orders.
Mr X can see it is going to cost him 5 mil shares to sell into the buy cue in order to catch 15 mil shares in stop loss orders.
Mr X orchestrates the selling campaign through a variety of brokers, probably in different trusts/names hiding his tracks while causing maximum downward pressure to the share price and in turn catching as many stops as profitable to do so.
Mr X also Catches all the weak hands dropping off due to the falling sp.
Mr X completes his attack and ends up with a cool 15-20mil shares more know that he is now ready to start the mark up phase.
Top 20 holders lists come out at the end of the month and Mr X has 20mil more than he did last month, and the other top 5 or 10 have increased holdings as well...
Mum and dad ask themselves "who did all that selling"???
Mr X smiles with satisfaction.

Mr X starts the mark up phase.
Mum and dad are angry, they sold at the low.
Mr X pushes the price through all lines of resistance and into new high ground.
Mum and dad wish they bought back in at 10c, but how high can it go???
Mr X smashes down a wall at 30c and runs it up to 40c.
The euphoria surrounding the stock is too much for mum and dad that sold out at 5c.
Mum and dad buy back in on the back of a GREAT announcement that momentarily pushes the stock to $1 on massive volume.
Mr X offloads to mums and dads...

Mr Y who has been quietly accumulating on the lows steps up to the plate and and decimates the euphoria and the sp tumbles to 30c.
Mum and dad sell at a loss while Mr Y rubs his hands together..............

Mr X and Mr Y are friends...
Mum and dad are sad...
