If you have any friends with qualms about nuclear power or there are any Greens you would particularly like to annoy, here's something to quote. Earlier this year an article in the journal of the American Chemical Society reckoned that nuclear power has saved 1.84 million lives.
Pushker Kharecha and James Hansen of NASA's Goddard Institute looked at the historical data from 1971 to 2009 and calculated how many more people would have died over the years from atmosphere-related issues such as respiratory diseases had nuclear not existed and instead that quantity of electricity had been generated by fossil fuel plants.
