there are two types of dilution, one is the absolute as you've pointed out, the second is the break-up value.....more stocks on hand does not equate to a better break-up value or operating value or any fundamental value, it does in fact dilute the value.... as in earnings per share...
i would rather own shares that have less in the auction compared to a peer stock....because i know the major money looks at this too
this is pretty simple stuff
taking up an offer at market price per share or being offered more stock at less than current market price per share has nothing to do with real valuation of the company from the expansion of the book....it's like the company owes more while you, the holder, own more...this doesnt mean you have more value just more units....

so, in that respect if you do or dont take part in more stocks (offering) the company is diluted, your value is diluted.....
