Hi I'm a long time lurker of this thread and just want to post my 2 cents worth, I have no experience or connection with the aluminium industry.
To my way of thinking the Moolap site is just a pilot plant, to both MHM and Alcoa.
As stated in the company update dated 18/03/13 Alcoa was giving them "new incentives for increased processing rates" It is my understanding that MHM is already running with enough capacity to process all incoming salt slag from both Alcoa and Sims. Draw your own conclusions from this.
Whether or not they can find volume buyers for AL80 in the US or abroad is not a great concern as at worst it can likely be land filled at lower cost, being classified as non dangerous industrial waste.
So if the process can be successfully upsized it gives Alcoa the ability to use the most economical aluminium recycling process with a non toxic end waste product, smiles all round :)
