a) The guys would have been minted when they walked away so they have no concerns about personal financial security ; hence can get into something that might be unproven now but has POTENTIAL humungous upside.
b) I used to distribute CISCO hardware and I can tell you routers and switches are about as interesting as watching paint dry. I would say the chance to be at the forefront of a tech like this would be very exciting.
