re: singapore's Dr. Chee's poverty can't be due to the salary he draws. Singapore's members of parliament are paid a salary atractive enough to provide a viable alternative to those people talented enough to be leaders in private enterprise. However it seems that the opposition members that get elected may have more principles to uphold than talent needed to achieve that, thus they never seem to be able to work with the system, instead try to tackle it head on, and end up becoming the opposition solely for the sake of opposition. Maybe their expectations are to high, trying to achieve too much too quickly. I don't know much about Dr. Chee, but earlier opposition members were not particularly talented as politicians, and by the time they learnt the ropes it was too late, they were broke.
