Whilst I agree with the above - it is only true in the bigger cities.
As an example - I went to a mates place in Hobart several Fridays ago.
Once a month - boys night.
Now, attending were all sorts of blokes - all sorts of races and all sorts of religions - the only difference you could see to a similar gathering 50 years ago was - no pork.
And that was out of respect for the blokes who didn't eat pork for religious reasons.
Didn't stop the booze, didn't stop the jokes, didn't stop the arguments about fav. footy teams, didn't stop having one hell of a good time.
It pretty much was like a time warp, but with different people.
I think all this stuff IS a problem - but only in places where the numbers are huge and big enough for groups of like to group together and not mix.
Somewhere small like Hobart and certainly the country, you just don't get those conditions -----------
and, people get on. imo there is nothing better than a mix of blokes - including Muslims and Asians standing around in a circle beef sausage in one hand, beer in the other, all wearing dumb footy scarves arguing about who's going to win the next game ------------- how bloody Aussie can you get?
Now, the Muslim guys were moderate (as was everyone) and everyone had taken up our dastardly ways (except the pork) - and out of respect for his guests, my mate left pork off the menu.
No one minded. Everyone chipped in something - labour or drinks or whatever -------- it works well.
I had the same experiences in Lightning Ridge decades back.
At one stage there was a war overseas??? From memory it might have been when the Serbs and Croats began fighting - there were many in that area (LR)-
what did they do? Well, they got together and had a party to celebrate their friendship and put forth hope that things would settle down.
Now, the point is that people just want to get on.
The vast majority of people that come to Australia, just want to be like Aussies, nothing more, nothing less.
Just like us if we went to live in France - you go to live a French way of life, not an Australian one.
But, something goes badly wrong in big places - ways of life get lost.
Look at Europe ------------ where do you go in Europe to see well, Europe?
Where do you go to see the old ways - the real flavour?
You go country --------- to the small places. Ditto China, Ditto Japan - Ditto anywhere.
So "The wonderful Australia I knew in my youth has gone."
No it hasn't --------- it is just hiding. And it avoids big cities like the plague.
