Re your post which provided those inconvenient dates and record of events relating to media releases of spying allegations against Australia.
Those dates indicate that Kevin Rudd took all the heat and must have managed the situation well enough that even during the election it all but blew over. On Rudd's brief watch and despite the furore of the election, there was no diplomatic problem with Indonesia.
This begs the question; "What happened after Rudd left office?".
Clues:
1. Tony Abbott became PM. 2. Abbott flagged massive cuts to Australia's foreign aid budget; from $9.5b to just $5b. 3. Abbott made demands of Indonesia that weren't well-received. 4. Abbott offended SBY at APEC; arriving late to his presentation to Vladimir Putin. 5. Abbott made more demands of Indonesia but they refused to accept the return of asylum seeker boats. 6. In Australia Abbott & Co. poured scorn on Indonesia's response, asserting that Australia is a sovereign nation [in reality it is a loose federation of British colonies]. 7. Abbott expressed his glowing appraisal of Sri Lanka's achievements at CHOGM and even gifted them two naval patrol boats. 8. Abbott downplayed a further report released by Edward Snowden alleging Australia has spied on SBY and his family. 9. Indonesia protested Abbott's response while Abbott's rhetoric hardened. 10. Indonesia withdrew its Ambassador and demanded an apology from Abbott himself for his response to Indonesia. 11. Abbott steadfastly refused to issue an apology.
Abbott is playing for high diplomatic stakes but has already placed his trump cards on the table.
Meantime all those trade-related matters such investment by Australian companies in Indonesia, the live cattle trade, 'stop the boats' and even tourism are looking the medusa square in the face.
