As an Australian expat living in Indonesia I have a few thoughts as to what may happen over the next few weeks in the relationship between Australia and Indonesia.
The Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono needs a contrite apology and explanation from PM Abbott to save face within Indonesia.Basically he needs a "minta maaf" from Abbott.
Should the Australian government and PM Abbott personally fail to deliver that I think there will perhaps be some likely consequences here.Listed below are some things I could envisage possibly happening:
- Perhaps expulsion of some of the Australian staff at the embassy
- a blind eye turned (or encouraged) for a veritable flotilla of asylum seeker boats
- a wink and a nod for certain domestic groups here (FDI [Islamic Defenders Front]) to stage noisy protests around the Australian embassy. Also potential sweeping by other nationalist groups in cities across the country against Australians
- the death penalty being carried out on some of the Bali Nine and a refusal to allow Schapelle Corby parole.
- Australian companies likely encountering more bureaucratic problems than usual.
- revoking the visa on arrival privileges for Australian tourists
Just my personal opinion and I hope that I am wrong.
