When you do a share buy back, it does not effect the earnings it is a balance sheet item it doesn't go to the P&L, so it has no effect on earnings as you have stated.
To be honest I'm not sure how the shorters would have a field day when you are supporting the share price with the buyback, the opposite is true.
They have diluted the share capital over the years that is part of the problem....
