The USA is now self sufficient when it comes to oil and gas and thats mainly due to the shale gas phenomonem where new technology has made it possible to produce this asset.
It was not that long ago that deep sea oil and gas production was thought to be in the too hard basket as well but new technology made that possible.
One would have to be totally naive to believe shale oil and gas will not go the same way.
Contracts and developements in offshore finds are now being re thought because of this alternative of a much cheaper form of energy.
