Good news certainly!
The fluid is almost definitely oil. A 27 barrel kick of gas at that depth would have caused all sorts of problems. If oil, the kick would indicate a significant oil column and good quality sands.
As for the cores, it is probably sidewall cores - used to get a quick fix on the quality of the sands and the age of the rocks when shales/clays are cored.
