I think a bit of a problem with the CBH model is access to capital.

Some of the CBH funds come from a levy which is imposed on grower deliveries each year and refunded 7 yrs later with no interest etc(my understanding). This is not entirely palatable to growers, especially in poorer times when they are cash strapped (or with big operating bank overdrafts.) In that situation, they are effectively providing finance to CBH at interest rates even higher than at which CBH might be able to borrow + effectively starving their farm of sorely needed borrowing capacity.

The Fonterra model... still a sort of co-op model but with some sort of investor shares that have little or limited investor shares could be a way.
Seems to have worked well for Fonterra and allowed it to become one of the big dairy processor/exporter players in the world.
If I remember correctly, the AWB (when it existed as a listed co) had this type of structure with grower and investor shares (with constrained or separate) voting rights, but was not necessarily to the liking of some of the big "investor shareholders" as it sort of inhibited their ability to "wheel & deal" to their own interests.
