It all depends who you ask.

My children would say my existence is to provide food, clothing, cars, phone plans, money for holidays etc. When I disagree and tell them to get a job, my existence becomes meaningless, or possibly even ceases.

Explaining to them that everything is meaningless without God, and they just think I must have a God complex.

My wife would say it is to put out the bins, make sure the cars keep working, there is money in the bank and to say "no" to the kids.

My dog thinks it is for walks and tummy rubs. And food.

If the essence of any religion lies SOLELY in the answer to the question "why do I exist" then it is eminently possible for people to not have a religion, as billions of them never actually ask that question, just as it is possible for people not to have a heart, like Dick Cheney.

If you were to ask a large portion of the population "have you ever considered why you exist" the deeper thinkers would say "'cos Mum and Dad had it off in the back of the FJ"; the others would just look blankly at you.
