There is light at the end of the tunnel: CRU sees an increasingly robust recovery towards the latter half of our medium term forecast. The heat chart suggests that commodity prices have, on the whole, reached their cyclical trough. From 2014, CRU analysts’ forecasts are for prices in our basket to be increasing on average.

The average price for the basket of commodities will be 4% up on the benchmark average by 2014, 7% higher by 2015, 10% by 2016 and a 14% increase in commodity prices is expected by the end of our medium term forecast period in 2017.

Base Metal prices are expected to increase most as the hangover from the GFC fades and there is a return to more ‘normal’ levels of economic activity. On average, base metal prices will increase 31% over our medium term forecast. However it is the base metal commodities that have smaller markets (zinc, tin, lead) that are driving the price of the basket to increase so the overall impact on the mining and metals sector likely to be less dramatic.

There will be hot metals over the next five years: CRU’s Graham Deller, our guru on the zinc market and Head of Zinc, Lead and Precious Metals Research, tells us that there are simply not enough quality projects in the pipeline to avoid the zinc market falling into deficit before the end of our forecast period. Zinc tops the heat chart with expectations of a serious supply crunch that will result in significantly higher prices. Lower commodity prices now and the drying up of funding for exploration and development makes the zinc supply gap and higher zinc prices all the more certain.
