not defending Apartheid in the least but there were vast areas of land set up in "traditional" areas and personally, I would have headed for one of those, sure I would have had to fend for myself largely but as $'s aren't so important to me that would be my answer. The black countries under Apartheid had their own laws, the segregation laws were as far as I know relative to "white SA". They were actually quite large: Transkei - 1980[1] 43,798 km² (16,911 sq mi) KZN 94361km2 compare to the size of England of 130395km2 (includes the N part of KZ I think)
