My apologies "badge of honour" is my term that encompasses the chest beating reflected in some of the comments. "I was smacked as a kid, it never hurt us, it did us all good" type narrative
If it worked so well why have we got so many mental health issues in adults these days? Why are +25% of over 65 got alcohol abuse issues. This childhood utopia that folks see in retrospect isn't showing in the life outcomes.
Yes they need discipline , they need to be run along a beach, they need to hot the gym, they need to know what it like to hike 50kms, they need to know what it takes to survive in big surf
thats discipline the rest of it is abuse, yes you have to teach character , but you dont do that by beating them , you do that by giving them insight into themselves, to challenge themselves etc
most kids are naughty because they are bored and their parents are lazy
