If you take your scenario of a 10m vertical versus 10m horizontal the result would possibly be similar as the drill is going through 10m of oil zone in both examples. However if the vertical drill then continues through the 10m
Oil zone into the unproductive rock this leaves a nett pay zone of 10m.
If the horizontal drill continues it will remain in the pay zone until it comes to the extremity of the oil field or the total length that the drill is capable of drilling, say 1 km. in this instance the drill will be travelling through the oil or gas zone for 1 km or 100 times the vertical drill.
