Hi Turbotummy,
Liniments are topical and are rubbed into the skin.
They typically have ingredients in them that have an effect on the skin such as methyl salycate, camphor etc.
People have made some pretty outrageous claims as to the effectiveness of their propriety ingredients in their liniments and balms over the years, Grandpa Simpsons, "ardour in your larder" comes to mind and the term snake oil I believe is derived from early chinese settlers who used to rub a compound made from a certain water snake into their joints. So if your asking me whether or not liniments in a patch is a good idea I would humbly say i don't think so.
As for pain control maybe you could ask some ex elite athletes who now suffer the effects of playing sports while being jabbed up with pain killers how that has worked for them.
