"I’ve lived on the east coast for 50 years and I know the tides/sea level very well. The highest sea level seen by myself was some 35 years ago when the beaches were severely eroded and the monster sea surge smashed an opening in the pool wall of the local council pool."

I recall that event very well as I was living in a small village called Callala Beach inside Jervis Bay at the time. Houses were in danger of falling into the sea and the residents assisted by the navy had to sandbag the entire beach.

The giant waves that pounded the beach for nearly a week was due to a weather cell that sat of the coast with the wind coming directly from the east. The surge that created the giant waves was entirely due to the weather event and nothing to do with existing sea levels at the time.
