    If you put that much into solid shares with a grossed up yield of around 7% (any of the banks, e.g.) it would give you around $105,000 in income.

    If you can't live on that, I wonder how all the hundreds of thousands of people on the average wage manage to exist?

    Even if you just put it in a term deposit at current rates you'd get about $60,000.
    Presumably at retirement you'd have paid off your house, so unless you're planning to support other people as well as yourself, being unable to live on $60K would indicate either lack of basic budgeting skills or a very extravagant wish list.
