Believable? Did navy personnel punish those who wanted to go to the toilet by holding a hot pipe? Unlikely. Were they called "monkeys from Africa"? Sounds too cliche to be believable. In any case what is so inhuman about calling someone an illegal refugee? they came without a visa. They could have got to a UNHCR centre and got one if they wanted too. There is one in Indonesia. Only 2500 applications were made last year and yet 20,000 asylumseekers came by boat.
But that is not the issue here. These people are liars. Clearly if they would lie about this they would more than likely make up a story of woe to get refugee status.
They don't have documents and it is very hard to substantiate their claims. Of course, being the humanitarian society we are they get the benefit of the doubt. 85% of refugees are on welfare after 5 years. the result of giving them the benefit of the doubt is enormous cost to the community. Not only do we have to pay their dole but they will want to bring their families out to and will then be forced to pay their dole as well.
